Do Leaders Strive to Improve?

I’ve been finishing up an article I’m writing about behaviors that drive employees from organizations. The article is done and should be turned in but something is bothering me so much about it I just can’t bring myself to call it ready to go.

The article is very typical of these types of articles. It comes from the viewpoint of the leader. Leader behaviors that result in employee action. It is the easiest viewpoint; “this is what is ineffective.”

The problem is, most people who are exhibiting ineffective behaviors, especially leaders, don’t recognize their behaviors as the problem. After all, they are a leader in their organization. That very definition implies success.

The article SHOULD be directed towards the employee. What strategies can they use? What tools are available to them? Front-line employees are the ones who are struggling to be successful in organizations and who are impacted the most by ineffective leadership. I want to speak to them.

Is there still value in holding a mirror up to leadership or is it better to direct resources to the employees?

    Hi Laurie,

Funny, I was just thinking of leaders that have inspired me over the years. It’s a very short list. The kinds of attributes I look for are good business sense and vision combined with the desire to retain good talent and a feeling of responsibility to the community. Being willing to make sacrifices and participate fully in the organizational change efforts, the rank and file have to undergo is important too. Organizational change that involves the C Suite as not just directors of the change but participants is key.
